DuPage Symphony Orchestra

The highly acclaimed Mariachi Acero de Las Vegas ensemble joins the DuPage Symphony Orchestra for a colorful and exuberant program, showcasing the flourishing musical tradition of mariachi, which is deeply rooted in Mexican popular culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. Orchestral works by Márquez, Moncayo, and more, ensemble works by the Mariachi Acero artists alone, and fusion pieces by major Mexican and Latin American composers – specially arranged for symphony orchestra and Mariachi Acero – guarantee an unforgettable concert experience!

Selections from Margaret Bond’s fervent Montgomery Variations plus Samuel Barber’s lyrical Violin Concerto, featuring virtuoso soloist Nathan Meltzer, make up the first half of our final concert, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Aaron Copland’s magnificent Third Symphony, written in 1946 on commission from Serge Koussevitsky, boasts a heroic finale based on Copland’s earlier Fanfare for the Common Man. The piece was immediately hailed as “the greatest American symphony – it goes from the heart to the heart.”

The DuPage Symphony Orchestra returns to beautiful Cantigny Park the last Saturday in June to celebrate popular music that reached the Top o’ the Charts in the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and beyond. Hit tunes from the Big Band Era and Rock ’n Roll to the Sounds of the Sixties – including the Beach Boys and The Beatles, The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, and even a little Motown – will have you tapping your feet, humming along, and maybe even dancing on the lawn! We showcase an incredible array of orchestral medleys with musical styles that both reflected and defined popular culture in the second half of the twentieth century, complementing the College of DuPage’s vibrant Andy Warhol exhibit. Join us for a fun-filled and nostalgic evening featuring some of the most energetic, inspiring, and enduring highlights of American popular song!
