2025/26 CSO Artist-in-Residence Joyce DiDonato is “a supreme artist, as much through sheer triumph of spirit as through musicianship” (Financial Times). The esteemed mezzo-soprano sings the Neruda Songs, Peter Lieberson’s heartbreakingly sensuous song cycle set to the poetry of Pablo Neruda. Edward Gardner concludes the program with Walton’s tumultuous and alluring First Symphony.

A piano sensation since his arrival on the international scene in the 1980s, Evgeny Kissin returns with a spectacular, eras-spanning recital. Beethoven’s revolutionary Piano Sonata No. 7 pairs perfectly with Chopin’s varied mazurkas before a second half devoted to Schumann’s deeply personal Kreisleriana and Liszt’s dazzling Hungarian Rhapsody.

Tempora mutantur — the nickname of Haydn’s Symphony No. 64 — takes its name from the Latin adage, “The times change, and we change with them.” Inspired by this reflection, Finnish conductor and violinist Pekka Kuusisto presents a dynamic program featuring former Mead Composer-in-Residence Anna Clyne’s Sound and Fury alongside folk- and dance-inspired works by Grieg and Rautavaara. Trading baton for bow, Kuusisto dazzles as soloist in Kreisler’s vibrant, Vivaldi-inspired Violin Concerto.

Having embraced Chicago and its musical life during her three years as the CSO Artist-in-Residence, Hilary Hahn returns to Symphony Center to share some of her latest musical passions. As The New York Times observes, Hahn’s performances offer “the golden-age richness and astonishing technique that have long made her a standout in a crowded field.”

Brahms’ First Piano Concerto awes with its grand scale, intense passion and unabashedly dramatic piano writing — the ideal showcase for Martin Helmchen, “who brings both freshness and expressive depth to everything he plays” (Chicago Classical Review). Works by Ravel and Richard Strauss evoke the romance and intrigues of Vienna’s bygone golden age.

Versatile, spontaneous and hard-swinging as ever, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is the world’s premier big band, comprised of the finest ensemble players in jazz today. Artistic director Wynton Marsalis, whose vast repertoire includes everything from new commissions to masterworks by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Mary Lou Williams and Thelonious Monk, returns with the band to its second home at Symphony Center.

Jazz, blues and orchestral sounds converge in a rousing celebration of the American story. The CSO joins forces with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for Liberty (Symphony No. 5), jazz legend Wynton Marsalis’ latest symphonic work. The program opens with a new work by American icon John Adams and Copland’s Appalachian Spring, which celebrates the American pioneer spirit and famously quotes the Shaker hymn Simple Gifts.

In his 2023 CSO subscription debut, Conrad Tao gave a “dazzling, staggering” performance of Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, wrote the Chicago Tribune, in which Tao “carried his melodies masterfully.” As part of the CSO’s monthlong focus on American music, the Illinois native returns with a selection of Gershwin song arrangements interspersed with works by Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Schoenberg and Robert Schumann.

Composed as Napoleon’s forces were threatening Austria, Haydn’s Mass in Time of War features an extraordinarily ominous use of timpani and ends with a plea for peace. Beethoven’s spirited First Symphony bears the influence of Haydn but also foreshadows the development of his own compositional style. MacMillan’s eloquent Larghetto is based on his choral setting of Psalm 51.
