Join us for an enchanting evening with the Handel & Haydn Society at the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, from 7:30 PM to 9:15 PM. This prestigious event will take place at the iconic Naumburg Bandshell, a symbol of New York's rich musical heritage.

Under the artistic direction of Jonathan Cohen, with Aisslinn Nosky as the director and violinist, the concert promises an unforgettable experience. The evening will feature the exceptional talents of Joélle Harvey (soprano), Ian Watson (organ), and Debra Nagy (oboe), bringing to life a selection of baroque masterpieces.

The program includes Arcangelo Corelli's Concerto grosso in D major, Op. 6 No. 1, a series of movements that showcase the depth and complexity of baroque music. George Frideric Handel's contributions include arias from "Guilio Cesare" and "Semele," as well as the Organ Concerto in F Major, HWV 295, all highlighting the vocal prowess of Joélle Harvey. The concert will also feature Johann Sebastian Bach's Concerto for Violin and Oboe in C Minor, BWV 1060R, a testament to the intricate interplay between violin and oboe.

An intermission will provide a moment of pause before the continuation of this musical journey, culminating in Handel's "Silete venti," HWV 242, a work that promises to leave the audience in awe with its symphonic and vocal beauty.

This performance by the Handel & Haydn Society, a group with a storied history in our concert series since June 2022, is made possible through the generous support of the Bernhill Fund. Poulenc’s Gloria, with its unexpected blend of secular and sacred sounds, fascinated (and scandalized) audiences from its first performances. “While writing it I had in mind those Crozzoli frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues,” the composer remarked. Lili Boulanger’s impressionistic “Of a Spring Morning” introduces the program with a bright festivity. Jean-Marie Zeitouni, a conductor of “ebullience and infectious enjoyment” (Boulder Weekly), leads this vivacious performance, which invites the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus and soprano Joélle Harvey to the stage for an evening of exultation that will keep music-lovers enraptured to its final whispered “Amen.”

Our celebration of Mozart begins at the very end. The circumstances surrounding Mozart’s unfinished Requiem are shrouded in mystery, but the music’s sorrow and beauty speak across the centuries. The Adagio and Fugue, another late work, is a dark and almost mystical vision. Acclaimed bass-baritone Dashon Burton returns to the SLSO in Detlev Glanert's arrangement of Brahms’ final song cycle, the Four Serious Songs.

The trumpet shall sound. Join the CSO, the May Festival Chorus with Director of Choruses Matthew Swanson, and an all-star cast of soloists for the return of Messiah to Music Hall. Sir Andrew Davis leads a true-to-original edition of the Handel’s masterwork, bringing out the glories of movements like the Hallelujah Chorus with sparklingly highlights from the entire Orchestra — an uplifting event for making forever and ever holiday memories.

Composed as Napoleon’s forces were threatening Austria, Haydn’s Mass in Time of War features an extraordinarily ominous use of timpani and ends with a plea for peace. Beethoven’s spirited First Symphony bears the influence of Haydn but also foreshadows the development of his own compositional style. MacMillan’s eloquent Larghetto is based on his choral setting of Psalm 51.

Experience the profound beauty of J. S. Bach's St. John Passion, performed by the esteemed Orchestra of St. Luke's, under the baton of Bernard Labadie. This concert, set to take place on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 7:00pm in the iconic Carnegie Hall - Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, is not just a musical event but a historic occasion marking the completion of Bernard Labadie’s remarkable tenure as principal conductor of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.

This performance is especially significant as it concludes Labadie’s cycle of major Bach choral works across New York, showcasing a spectacular cast of singers alongside La Chapelle de Québec. This choir, known for its extensive and celebrated history with Labadie and the OSL, promises to elevate the masterpiece to new heights. As part of the orchestra’s 50th anniversary season, this event is a fitting tribute to an incredible journey, closing a chapter in triumphant fashion.

The evening will feature a lineup of exceptional talent, including tenor Andrew Haji, bass-baritone Philippe Sly, soprano Joélle Harvey, countertenor Hugh Cutting, tenor Samuel Boden, and bass William Thomas, with the chorus by La Chapelle de Québec. Each performer brings a unique depth and expertise to the rendition of Bach’s awe-inspiring work.
