Des Moines Metro Opera

Indianola, IA, United States

Founded in 1973, Des Moines Metro Opera (DMMO) is a revered non-profit, professional opera company that has been committed to delivering world-class opera productions and essential performing arts education to the region. Over the years, DMMO has established itself as a cultural beacon with a reputation for excellence in operatic programming and a commitment to nurturing talent through its educational initiatives. **Design & Production Internship Program** In 2010, DMMO initiated a pilot internship program focusing on technical aspects of theatre production, aiming to extend its educational outreach and bolster sustainability within the production industry. Now in its 13th year, the Design & Production Internship Program has flourished, offering nearly thirty positions across a broad spectrum of theatrical production disciplines. The program's mission is to furnish theatre arts students with a platform to refine their skills, gain invaluable professional experience, and build a network of contacts that are essential for a successful career in the arts. Interns in the program benefit from a rigorous nine-week training and work experience, which includes talkbacks with directors, designers, and production staff, as well as workshops on topics such as resume refinement, networking, and contract negotiation. Practical, hands-on instruction in stagecraft skills like rigging, welding, and painting is also provided, alongside vital training in stage safety and first aid. Interns work closely with a team of 38 professional staff and designers from across the United States, enhancing their professional network and exposure to the industry. **Festival Orchestra** The Des Moines Metro Opera Festival Orchestra is a cornerstone of the company's artistic excellence. Under the baton of Music Director and Principal Conductor David Neely, the orchestra has been lauded for its high-quality performances and is considered a jewel among regional opera companies. The orchestra is composed of professional musicians who are engaged from across North America, many of whom are members of other professional orchestras that do not have summer seasons. This allows DMMO to attract top-tier talent to its festival orchestra. The musicians are selected through auditions and have the opportunity for advancement through a probationary/tenure process. Employment conditions are managed through a collective bargaining agreement with the American Federation of Musicians Local 75 in Des Moines. In addition to performing for the mainstage operas, orchestra members may also participate in the company's 2nd Stages Series and the popular Stars of Tomorrow concert. **Commitment to the Arts and Community** Des Moines Metro Opera continues to be a pillar of the arts community, contributing to the cultural richness of the region and fostering the growth of opera as an art form. Through its educational programs, such as the Design & Production Internship and OPERA Iowa, and by providing volunteer opportunities, DMMO engages with the community and inspires future generations of artists and audiences. **Support and Philanthropy** As a non-profit organization, DMMO relies on the generosity of its patrons and the support of corporate and public partners. The DMMO Foundation, annual fund, and planned giving programs are integral to the company's ability to maintain its high standards of production and educational programming. **Visiting the Opera** For those looking to experience the magic of opera, DMMO offers a range of visitor services, including directions, dining options, shuttle services, hotel partnerships, and an opera boutique to enhance the overall experience. Ticketing options are diverse, with single tickets, subscriptions, gift cards, and a detailed seat map available to accommodate the preferences of all opera-goers. Des Moines Metro Opera remains a testament to the enduring power of the performing arts and a beacon of operatic excellence in the heart of the Midwest.
