Brahms' string sextets are considered among his greatest works in the chamber music genre. He made his own arrangements of them for piano four-hands, common practice at the time for making the music known and increasing opportunities for royalties. When his friend Theodor Kirchner arranged them for piano trio (piano, violin, and cello), Brahms was delighted. However, Kirchner’s stripped-down version suggests that he was targeting amateur players....
