Gotham Early Music Scene

An exploration of French and French-inspired works from the early to mid-18th century with works by Leclair, Telemann, and Quantz. Leclair married Italian virtuosity with French taste and so brought to fruition Couperin’s goal of Gouts-réünis as well as the gemischter Geschmack of Telemann and Quantz. We round out the program with a Paris Quartet of Telemann and a highly ornamented Quantz Adagio. This was a very exciting time musically to be in Paris as the Querelle de Bouffons raged on. Leclair was a great innovator in putting elements of both Italian and French styles together, and Gold and Glitter explores ways these styles interact, pointing to the future of music in Europe.
