The concert's program is centered around Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s "La Couronne de fleurs," and will also include works by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Henry Purcell, and Jean-Féry Rebel, among others. An exploration of French and French-inspired works from the early to mid-18th century with works by Leclair, Telemann, and Quantz. Leclair married Italian virtuosity with French taste and so brought to fruition Couperin’s goal of Gouts-réünis as well as the gemischter Geschmack of Telemann and Quantz. We round out the program with a Paris Quartet of Telemann and a highly ornamented Quantz Adagio. This was a very exciting time musically to be in Paris as the Querelle de Bouffons raged on. Leclair was a great innovator in putting elements of both Italian and French styles together, and Gold and Glitter explores ways these styles interact, pointing to the future of music in Europe.

The Sebastians perform Bach’s “little” Mass in G major, BWV 236, in a performance with forces matching Bach’s own proportions—oboes, bassoon, strings, and continuo, plus a stunning vocal quartet who perform as soloists and chorus: Clara Rottsolk, Wee Kiat Chia, James Reese, and Tyler Duncan. Between the movements of the mass, we will include works by Bach’s contemporaries, also simulating the way the movements of the mass would have been separated by parts of the church service.

Understanding that dance played a pivotal role in baroque culture, the Sebastians, under the direction of Daniel Lee and Jeffrey Grossman, aim to bring a fresh perspective to these classical pieces. This year, they are excited to introduce a special collaboration with Steven Vilsaint, a dancer from the hip-hop world, whose performance is inspired by the music of Bach and other composers featured in the program.

The concert will showcase a selection of sonatas and suites by Johann Sebastian Bach, Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, and Louis Marchand, promising a 70-minute performance without intermission, designed to immerse the audience in the harmonious blend of baroque music and contemporary dance.
