With his history-making Carnegie Hall Perspectives series, violinist Maxim Vengerov is rewarding audiences with crowning jewels not only of the violin repertoire, but that of chamber music at large. Tonight only, he gathers an all-star lineup to perform Brahms’s impactful Piano Quintet and Clarinet Quintet, two absolute pinnacles of the repertoire. Collaborators Vilde Frang, James Ehnes, and Daniel Müller-Schott anchor the performance, with “powerhouse pianist” Yefim Bronfman (Los Angeles Times) and New York Philharmonic Principal Clarinetist Anthony McGill, Musical America’s 2024 Instrumentalist of the Year, featured in turn.

In 1934 at Carnegie Hall, Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony received its New York premiere, which was met with wild enthusiasm by audiences. Prominent critics called it “the most distinctive and promising American symphonic proclamation which has so far been achieved” (New York American). Tonight, The Met Orchestra offers a rare opportunity to hear this now-shockingly neglected work, which remains every bit as powerful today. Plus, hear Metropolitan Opera star Isabel Leonard in a favorite from West Side Story and Barber’s gorgeous Knoxville: Summer of 1915. The concert concludes with the spirited suite from Fancy Free, Bernstein’s first collaboration with choreographer Jerome Robbins.

Tonight, as part of Carnegie Hall’s United in Sound: America at 250 festival, the ensemble performs works by American composers Valerie Coleman, Gabriela Lena Frank, Bernstein, and Steve Reich, plus Dvořák’s String Quintet, written alongside the “American” Quartet while the composer was living in Iowa.

Hear the resplendent orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera perform Bruckner’s mountainous, richly textured Eighth Symphony. Music Director and Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin is hugely acclaimed for his interpretation, called “certainly one of the most awe-inspiring ever made … as immense, far-reaching, and stupendous as the composer ever could have wished” (AllMusic).

Esteemed interpreter of Gustav Mahler’s works, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts The Met Orchestra in the composer’s Fourth Symphony. Though it’s the most compact of Mahler’s grand compositions, it contains numerous iconic moments—from its sleigh-bell opening, to a country fiddle solo performed by “Death,” to the fourth movement’s groundbreaking combination of solo voice and orchestra, showcasing mezzo-soprano extraordinaire Joyce DiDonato in this performance. DiDonato is also featured in Mahler’s five-song Rückert-Lieder. A selection by the late Saariaho, one of the great composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, completes the program.
