For two consecutive nights, Sir Antonio Pappano leads the London Symphony Orchestra in the ensemble’s long-awaited return to Carnegie Hall. On night one, they welcome the great violinist Janine Jansen as soloist in Bernstein’s Serenade for string orchestra, harp, and percussion. Inspired by Plato’s dialogue on the subject of love, the Serenade is one of Bernstein’s most lyrical pieces and was given its premiere by Isaac Stern. It is bookended by ...
