Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas — “a podium hero” (The New York Times) — opens the season with Emanuel Ax as the soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 14, a spirited work with beautiful interplay between the piano and orchestra. The concert concludes with Mahler’s monumental Fifth Symphony, including the Adagietto, composed as an encoded love letter to his wife .
