Enjoy an afternoon of folk music-inspired pieces from Eastern European composers. Ligetti’s Concert Romanesc evoked memories of his childhood in Romania, and you’ll hear traditional Czech, Romanian, and Hungarian folk dances throughout the rest of the program.

St. Paul's Syracuse, the Downtown Episcopal Church

We begin the concert with Guilliame Connesson’s “Celephais” from Les Cités de Lovecraft, inspired by the fantasy stories of H.P. Lovecraft. Awadagin Pratt returns to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23. The Syracuse Orchestra also presents Symphony No. 5 by Prokofiev, which is one of his most popular works and was his hymn to a “free and happy man”.

Dance and sing along with six decades of pop and rock hits as The Syracuse Orchestra performs by candlelight.

We begin with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1, celebrating the 100th anniversary of its premiere. In the second half, William Grant Still’s Serenade reflects American folk music. Then, listen for elements of jazz, blues, and ragtime as pianist Terrence Wilson performs Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F Major.

During WWII in Terezin Concentration Camp, conductor and prisoner Rafael Schachter taught 150 prisoners the Verdi Requiem note by note after grueling days of forced labor. In an act of utmost defiance, this group persevered to keep art alive and performed the Requiem 16 times for their fellow prisoners. In a partnership with the Jewish Federation of CNY, we are proud to present The Defiant Requiem.

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, The Syracuse Orchestra performs music from around the world that celebrates freedom and our richly diverse local community.

Let Freedom Ring

Julian Schwarz is featured in Jennifer Higdon’s Cello Concerto, commissioned by Robert and Vicki Lieberman. We finish with the operatic music of Strauss’ Des Rosenklavier Suite. Gerard Schwarz conducts this season finale celebration concert.

You can be The Dancing Queen and sing along to your ABBA favorites as The Syracuse Orchestra rocks out with vocalists in The Music of ABBA.
