St. Paul's Syracuse, the Downtown Episcopal Church

Local dance students perform to waltzes, tangos, and other traditional dance pieces played by The Syracuse Orchestra.

The Syracuse Orchestra performs Debussy’s Pagodes. Principal Trombone Ben Dettelback performs a video-game inspired trombone concerto followed by Brahms Symphony No. 2, which includes the famous melody “Brahms Lullaby”.

Schnittke’s Moz-Art à la Haydn is based on an unfinished fragment by Mozart and features playful themes from both Mozart and Haydn. The program also features Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and Stravinsky’s chamber concerto, Dumbarton Oaks, which was heavily inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg series.

Popcorn Night At The Movies

It’s a concert inspired by love! We open with Missy Mazzoli’s These Worlds in Us, expressing the love of a daughter for her father. Then Jiebing Chen, performing on the traditional Chinese instrument the erhu, joins for The Butterfly Lovers concerto, originally written for violin and based on a Chinese folklore love story. The Syracuse Orchestra finishes the program with the Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov, telling the story of “One Thousand and One Nights”.

Love Stories

Enjoy an afternoon of folk music-inspired pieces from Eastern European composers. Ligetti’s Concert Romanesc evoked memories of his childhood in Romania, and you’ll hear traditional Czech, Romanian, and Hungarian folk dances throughout the rest of the program.

A tribute to the ultimate “Queen of Soul,” this program features symphony-favorite Capathia Jenkins and three-time Grammy Award nominee Ryan Shaw performing iconic hits like Respect, Think, A Natural Woman, Chain of Fools, Amazing Grace, and many others.
