For Russian-American conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, it can mean Missy Mazzoli seeing heaven in a Detroit steelworks, or Brahms embracing his inner Hungarian in one of the sweetest and sunniest of great violin concertos. And above all, it can mean Dmitri Shostakovich combining tragedy, irony and pure knockabout farce in his extraordinary Sixth Symphony. A fitting tribute in his anniversary year.
