Ludwig van Beethoven's sixth symphony was named by the composer himself as the "Pastoral Symphony", as he described his love for the countryside in it. Ernest Chausson's romantic song cycle Poème de l'amour et de la mer (Poem of Love and the Sea) describes both the flowers of the sea and the death of love, and in Jean Sibelius's dance intermezzo the shepherd god Pan's hunt for the mountain nymph Echo is set to music.
