In 1800, Beethoven was 29 years old and facing a major commission to write his first work for the stage, a ballet based on the myth of Prometheus. The Italian composer and dancer Salvatore Viganò was originally tasked with presenting the work to the Viennese Archduchess Maria Theresa.
