Annapolis Symphony Orchestra

Annapolis, MD, United States

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is a distinguished performing arts organization based in Maryland's capital city. Celebrating over 60 years of musical excellence, the ASO has established itself as a cornerstone of cultural life in Annapolis, providing unforgettable cultural experiences to audiences of all ages. The orchestra is composed of 70 professional union musicians, who showcase their talents in various performances throughout the year. Founded in 1962 as the Annapolis Civic Orchestra, the ASO was the brainchild of Gilbert McNew, a local musician, and John E. Bornhoeft, a violinist and community orchestra enthusiast. The ensemble quickly grew, necessitating the appointment of Kenneth W. Page as the first Music Director. The orchestra's inaugural public performance occurred on May 22, 1962, alongside the Annapolis Choral Society. In the 1962-1963 season, the ensemble officially adopted the name Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. The ASO's early years were marked by financial challenges, but thanks to impassioned pleas from the community and the formation of the first Board of Directors, led by Philip Richebourg, the orchestra secured the necessary support to flourish. The untimely death of Kenneth Page in 1969 marked the end of an era, but also set the stage for a period of transformative growth under the baton of Leon Fleisher, a renowned pianist and conductor. During Fleisher's tenure, the ASO saw a significant rise in artistic standards, the introduction of auditions for orchestra members, and the engagement of high-caliber guest artists. Following Fleisher's departure, the Symphony continued to evolve under the leadership of Peter Bay and subsequent Music Directors, including Gisèle Ben-Dor and Dr. Leslie B. Dunner. Each brought their own unique contributions to the ASO, from educational outreach programs to recording the orchestra's first album. In 2005, José-Luis Novo took up the mantle as Music Director, infusing the orchestra with his artistic vision and innovative programming. Under his direction, the ASO has continued to garner enthusiastic reviews and audience acclaim. Notable initiatives include the Annapolis Charter 300 Young Composers Competition and the establishment of the Annapolis Symphony Academy, which offers pre-college musicians a high-caliber training program in an environment that values excellence and diversity. The ASO's mission is to inspire, educate, and enrich lives through extraordinary musical experiences with uncompromising artistic excellence. As the ASO enters its 61st year, it remains an anchor among Annapolis arts and culture organizations, contributing to the region's vibrant cultural community and generating significant economic impact.
