Jaap van Zweden conducts Russian masters. Beatrice Rana (“among the most faultless of young pianists today,” <em>The Washington Post)</em> makes the most of the rapturous melodies and pyrotechnics of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. Shostakovich’s epic, eloquent Fifth Symphony harbors a core of profound sadness alongside triumphant marches and heroic brass.
