Anton Bruckner, known as the creator of enormous symphonic colossi, actually composed chamber music too! The 38-year-old wrote his C minor string quartet as a study project during his lessons with Otto Kitzler. It was only rediscovered in 1950 and premiered shortly afterwards. Bruckner, however, composed the string quintet between his work on the 5th and 6th symphonies after the Viennese conductor and violinist Joseph Hellmesberger had asked him to do so "repeatedly and urgently". The result was a pocket-sized symphony, as Bruckner managed to transfer his symphonic ideas to a small chamber ensemble. When Mozart settled in Vienna in 1781, he met a friend from his days in Salzburg: the horn player Joseph Leutgeb, for whom Mozart not only composed his horn quintet, but later also his four horn concertos. The doubling of the viola shifts the sound balance into the soft middle range and gives the horn quintet its sonorous sound.
