In 1989, shortly before New Year's Eve, the opening of the Iron Curtain was symbolically celebrated with Beethoven's 9th Symphony. In two concerts - once in the West Berlin Philharmonie, once in the Schauspielhaus on Gendarmenmarkt in East Berlin - Leonard Bernstein conducted Beethoven's musical appeal to humanity.
