Johann Wolfgang von Goethes brevroman Den unge Werthers lidelser anses for at være tysk litteraturs første bestseller og skabte i sin tid en såkaldt ’Werther-mani’ i hele Europa. Unge mænd identificerede sig så stærkt med Goethes hovedperson Werther, at adskillige gik i hans fodspor og begik selvmord.
