The Grammy and Emmy Award-winning trio Time for Three (TF3) makes its debut at the Hylton Center. Time for Three defies convention and boundaries by showcasing excellence across different genres, including classical music, Americana, and singer-songwriter. Consisting of Charles Yang (violin, vocals), Nicolas "Nick" Kendall (violin, vocals), and Ranaan Meyer (double bass, vocals), TF3 combines their instruments and voices in a remarkable sound, establishing a distinct voice of expression that resonates with listeners worldwide. The trio has collaborated with today’s most esteemed composers and artists; worked with Robin Wright to compose the music for her directorial film debut Land; and graced top stages around the world. Time for Three is committed both on and offstage to encouraging the next generation of musicians. As a Mason Artist-in-Residence, TF3 will work with the community through classes and workshops in conjunction with its performance.

Opening the program is Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, one of the most recognizable pieces of classical music in the world. The piece has been a mainstay of pop culture in films such as Lorenzo’s Oil and Platoon, has marked somber occasions with performances at the funerals of FDR and JFK, and even experienced a rediscovery by younger generations when it was performed as a dance music anthem by Dutch DJ, Tiësto in the early 2000’s.

Genre-bending string trio Time for Three joins conductor Robert Moody and the SF Symphony for a lively program featuring Mason Bates’s Silicon Hymnal, a Symphony commission. Described as “a book of songs with a heart of electronica,” Bates’s triple concerto is tailor-made for Time for Three’s signature sound. Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story closes the program with Broadway panache.

Before every Masterworks Concert, the Wichita Symphony Orchestra will present pre-concert talks which help prepare you and deepen your understanding of the music to be performed in the program. Sometimes our guest soloists even join Maestro Hege for a discussion of their concerto collaboration! St. Ann’s Warehouse, WNYC, and Brooklyn Bridge Park present Rhapsody for This Land: The American Odyssey in Music, a free, outdoor concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of Gershwin’s exuberant American anthem Rhapsody in Blue. Situated beneath the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, the concert features classical pianist and host of NPR’s AMPLIFY  Lara Downes, performing the New York City premiere of her take on Gershwin’s innovative 1924 work in a radical new arrangement by the Puerto Rican composer Edmar Colón. Considering American music through a century of immigration and transformation, Rhapsody for This Land celebrates our country’s long history of hope, protest, and change.

Time for Three wow-ed our audience to kick off this festival, and now they return to close with music from their grammy winning recording. Copland is the father of the American sound, and his Third Symphony is increasingly recognized as his most outstanding achievement. Strauss’ symphonic portrait of the rakish Don Juan and Ravel’s technicolor ballet scenes show off every imaginable shading of orchestral sound, while the fiery Symphony No. 59 from Haydn has the “father of the symphony” demanding total commitment and precision from his orchestral arsenal.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and The Clarice have announced a groundbreaking partnership for 2023-24 featuring extraordinary performances, unique educational experiences and meaningful community engagement. In the second of these performances, Marin Alsop, BSO Music Director Laureate and NOI+F Music Director at The Clarice, reunites with composer Kevin Puts to present his dazzling concerto for the improvising/vocalizing/ barn-burning/genre-crossing talents of the Grammy Award-winning string trio Time for Three. Haydn's fiery Symphony No. 59 brings total commitment from the orchestra. Rounding out the program is Maurice Ravel's technicolor ballet Daphnis et Chloé showing off every imaginable shading of orchestral sound.

The orchestra continues through the High Plains in Thomson’s film score for The Plow That Broke the Plains and finishes the American tour with the “Simple Gifts” of Copland’s Appalachian Spring.
