Polari is a pop album for the ages, looking back on history as a means to learn more about yourself. Olly Alexander’s first album under his own name takes as its primary inspiration the (almost) lost art of Polari. Originating around Europe and the Romani community as early as the 1600s, this coded slang became in effect a secret language for homosexuals and the stigmatized during the twentieth century. It’s a concept Olly first came across when coming out and resonated more deeply with when playing Richie in ‘It’s A Sin’, where he grappled with questions about identity, self-expression and community. The kinds of which have always populated British life and have long been threaded through the history of pop music - you just had to know where to look.

Dunford’s public chronicle of home creates vivid portraits of real people, the persistent spirit of community and a sense of completely unfiltered emotion. Latest single from the album, ‘Billy Flynn of Bethnal Green,’ was inspired by a friend of his father, a former East End boxer who found a new identity in Soho’s drag scene. Meanwhile, also taken from the album, ‘The Local’ celebrates a historic love for the pub and the many characters it houses each weekend. With no airs and graces, Dunford explains, “I wanted it to capture the antics, the sense of community – it’s where I go when I’m up, down, or somewhere in between.”

Characters such as “Michael” (Pat Shortt) the hapless builder (Followed weekly on Tik Tok, X, Insta and Facebook by hundreds of thousands) seems to have the answer to all things that are wrong in the world and shares the advice gifted to him by his late grandmother from Tipperary. Another outrageous character is the “mother of the child” (Faye Shortt) at the school railings waiting to pick up her child PJ, it’s not like her at all to talk bad about anyone but she just can’t help herself, sharing her views on the school principal and her tummy tucking friend back from Turkey.

 In 2024, we played the Electric Picnic for the 1st time ever at a jam PACKED Salty Dog stage and this was one of the highlights so far. Then to head off to Australia for a sold out tour was another, only to have to come back earlier than planned as we were guests of COLDPLAY for 2 amazing gigs in Croke park to 82,000 people a night, yes that was most definitely another one of our highlights! We have been to the UK for some shows.

Five years after No Treasure but Hope (2019) and three years after 2021’s Distractions, Tindersticks return with new album ‘Soft Tissue’ to be released on City Slang on October 13th 2024. “New World”, the first track written for Soft Tissue and a springboard for the album’s thematic concerns about personal/public worlds knocked off-kilter. The arrangements pick up close to where 2016’s The Waiting Room left off and steer the record into febrile terrain, balanced between the band letting loose,  Julian Siegel’s brass arrangements, Dan McKinna’s string arrangements and Gina Foster’s soulful backing vocals. It is over 30 years since the release of the first BJM single She Made Me / Evergreen. Released in 1992, as the British music press descended on the US to anoint the next US guitar band as flavour of the month and major labels were on the hunt for the compliant hopefuls to be their latest quick fix, Anton Newcombe had an idea: say no. As leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Newcombe had already established himself as a visionary songwriter, a man to whom making music wasn’t a lifestyle choice or a hipster haircut but the very fabric of existence itself, and he had observed in silent horror as his peers meekly acquiesced to everything – yes to contracts, yes to management, yes to suggestions, yes to this, yes to that, yes, yes, yes. The Undertones emerged from Derry in 1976, the result of five friends (John O’Neill, Damian O’Neill, Feargal Sharkey, Billy Doherty and Michael Bradley) learning how to play basic rock and roll. Practicing in their bedrooms eventually led to the band recording John O’Neill’s ‘Teenage Kicks’ in 1978 on Terri Hooley's Good Vibrations label in Belfast. The legendary DJ John Peel received a copy and liked it so much he played it twice in a row on his radio show.
