In Italy, a whole new world opened up to Handel and the Te Deum by Francesco Antonio Urio was part of it. Urio’s compositions enthused the young man from Halle so much that he drew inspiration from them for several of his own works. For example, he borrowed sections from the Te Deum for his oratorio, Saul. Baroque legend Reinhard Goebel, together with the MDR Radio Choir and Staatskapelle Halle, gives us another opportunity to hear this profound piece of music.

A sunrise in the mountains, a strenuous climb, then the coolness of the forest and the sound of the waterfall. Lush mountain meadows and the ringing of cowbells, finally an approaching thunderstorm, lightning and thunder and a narrow survival at the dangerous height. What, if not a symphony orchestra, could depict this intoxication of colors and sounds? And who, if not Richard Strauss, could paint this sound painting? The Alpine Symphony features over 100 musicians, including wind machines, thunder sheets and cowbells. But Strauss depicts his mountain world with great sensitivity, creating new timbres in very different ensembles. And the hike to the mountain peak is not just to be understood literally - the symphonic poem is also related to the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche and can be understood as a depiction of an entire life.

Alice feiert Geburtstag. Plötzlich verschwindet die reale Welt und Alice lässt das Hier und Jetzt hinter sich. Entführt von einem gehetzten, weißen Kaninchen taucht sie ein in eine fremde Welt, in eine fantastische Welt. Hier steht alles Kopf. Alice wird so groß, dass sie durch keine Tür mehr passt; dann wird Alice so klein, dass sie keine Türklinke mehr erreichen kann. Sie betritt verwandelt ein Wunderland, trifft auf eine rauchende Raupe, schwimmt durch ein Meer von Tränen. Sie begegnet der Grinsekatze, die keinesfalls einem schnurrenden Haustier ähnelt. Bei einer merkwürdigen Teegesellschaft, very british, wird gerastet und schließlich trifft sie am Hofe der Herzkönigin ein, die weniger herzlich ist, als es ihr Name vermuten lässt. Erst soll Alice mit ihr Krocket spielen, dann erlebt sie deren Verärgerung über ein entwendetes Törtchen. Bevor die Geschichte in der Geschichte mit einem Gerichtsurteil zu einem Ende kommt, erwacht Alice wieder im Jetzt, in der realen Welt. Alice feiert Geburtstag. Auch als literarischer Nonsens bezeichnet, bietet die Romanvorlage von Charles Ludwige Dodgson (Pseudonym: Lewis Carroll) einen Reichtum an Metaphern und Spielszenarien.

Italy has always been a place of longing. For centuries, the country and its ancient cultural treasures have served as a source of inspiration for poets and thinkers. Artists and composers - mostly young men from good families - traditionally set off for the south in their youth and brought home groundbreaking ideas that constantly renewed local art. Georg Friedrich Handel's cantata "Il Delirio amoroso" was written at the beginning of his study trip in Rome in 1707, but the 22-year-old could not get enough of Italy - his trip lasted an incredible four years! Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy stopped off in the same cities more than a century later: Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples, among others, inspired him to write his "Italian" symphony. It exudes a light, southern charm and conjures up images of his journey.

We all know deep feelings of grief, despair and loneliness and are connected to all of humanity through them. Becoming aware of this can be comforting and dealing with these emotions can even have a healing effect. Peter Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony is pain turned into sound and the expression of a deep personal crisis: his unhappy marriage plunged the homosexual composer into depression, and death seemed to him the only way out.

Im Mittelpunkt des Konzerts steht das auf dem Marktplatz zu Halle stehende Händel-Denkmal. Finanziert durch großzügige Spenden und Benefiz-Konzerte wurde es zum 100. Todestag des Komponisten im Jahr 1859 eingeweiht. Selbst die international gefeierte Sopranistin Jenny Lind ließ es sich nicht nehmen und reiste nach Halle, um in einer Messiah-Aufführung zu Gunsten des Denkmals mitzuwirken.

Works whose creators themselves did not think would one day be world famous: Johannes Brahms, a pianist by training, had already premiered his first piano concerto and the music world was eagerly awaiting a violin concerto by the 45-year-old. After all, Beethoven and Mendelssohn had presented masterpieces. The reviews were devastating: the conductor Hans von Bülow was of the opinion that the work was written less "for" than "against the violin", virtuosos such as Henryk Wieniawski called the piece "unplayable". Nowadays, this concerto is an indispensable part of a violinist's repertoire.
