Alban Gerhardt, one of today's leading cellists, accepted the Rostock invitation and, with his technical perfection and profound musicality, promises an extraordinary concert event. The versatile artist will perform Dmitri Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2, which, between the lines, was intended as an ironic response to the double standards of the Soviet officials who denounced him during Stalin's lifetime and later courted him. Written for Mstislav Rostropovich, the concerto premiered with the legendary cellist on the composer's 60th birthday in Moscow on September 25, 1966.

After opening the season with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 7, Chief Conductor Marcus Bosch concludes the Philharmonic Concert series with the composer's Symphony No. 9 – and it's time to say goodbye. Composed in Toblach and New York, this large-scale symphony is Mahler's last completed work. The then New York Chief Conductor looks back with nostalgia, bids farewell, and seems to capitulate with his visions. The result was an impressive and bold sonic edifice, with which he builds a world using every means at his disposal – ultimately crossing the threshold to modernity.
