Riverside Symphony is a distinguished orchestra based in New York City, renowned for presenting innovative musical programs that blend lesser-known compositions with classic masterpieces. Founded in 1981 by conductor George Rothman and composer Anthony Korf, the orchestra has established itself as a bastion of musical discovery, frequently performing at the esteemed Alice Tully Hall within Lincoln Center. Their commitment to exploration and originality is evidenced by their seven critically acclaimed CDs, which feature a range of orchestral works. Riverside Symphony's history is marked by numerous significant achievements, including the premiere of major orchestral works by some of the most influential contemporary composers, with six pieces commissioned by the orchestra itself. The ensemble has also shed light on underperformed compositions by classical giants such as Haydn, Prokofiev, and Ravel. Over the years, the symphony has provided a platform for more than 50 world-class young soloists, many of whom made their New York orchestral debuts with the orchestra. Their discography boasts seven internationally recognized recordings of contemporary orchestral works, with one being nominated for a Grammy Award in 2000. The Riverside Symphony International Composer Reading Project stands out as a unique initiative, offering a global forum for composers and hosting a special competition for American composers. This project underscores the orchestra's dedication to fostering new talent and expanding the contemporary orchestral repertoire. Critical acclaim for Riverside Symphony is widespread, with The New York Times lauding their ambitious and original programs and their "tightly focused, fully polished sound." Time Out New York has described them as a "self-styled classical garage band," while The New Yorker has commended their programming as exemplary for any premier American ensemble. Fanfare magazine has praised the assured performances under George Rothman's baton, and New York Magazine has recognized the orchestra's imaginative programming and nourishing music-making. Beyond their concert hall successes, Riverside Symphony is also deeply invested in educational outreach. Since 1999, the orchestra has been actively involved in bringing the joys of music to New York City public schools through its Music Memory program. Additionally, the orchestra engages adult audiences with its popular Salon Series and Hear Hear preview performances, further demonstrating its commitment to music education and community engagement. Riverside Symphony continues to be a vital part of New York City's cultural landscape, celebrated for its brave and enterprising spirit that brings programs of remarkable ambition and originality to the public's attention.
