The springs of music

The refinement and lightness of Viennese salons color Schubert's Trout , whose fourth movement is inspired by the famous lied of the same name. The musicians of the OSM offer it to us alongside that of his contemporary George Onslow, a great little-known romantic. An opportunity to hear pianist Godwin Friesen, winner of the 2022 OSM Competition.

In the first part, Pierre Hantaï presents a selection of works of his choice of approximately  30 minutes. In the second part, the harpsichordist tackles the monumental  Goldberg Variations.

The estuary represents this astonishing space of transition and transformation where fresh water meets salt water and unexpected potentials are revealed, like the encounters imagined by Constantinople. This third collaboration between kora master Ablaye Cissoko and Persian setar ambassador Kiya Tabassian is none other than the junction point where the rivers of their musical memories meet. Their dialogue, which is refined and enriched from year to year, gives rise to musical conversations that inspire a sense of wonder and awaken consciousness.

Enter the history of the keyboard trio! The musicians invite you to go back in time to discover two significant pieces in the genesis of this repertoire. Haydn's "gypsy" trio was composed at a time when he was exploring the more personal musical avenues offered by chamber music. His music shines here with its contagious joy and its luminous and danceable passages. Schubert, for his part, immerses us in a flow of melodies emblematic of his style with his Trio No. 1. The founder of the lied indeed distinguishes himself with his passionate effusions and his lyricism that rub shoulders with moments of lightness. A creation by Montreal composer Jesse Plessis completes this program with a return to today's music.

The complete performance of Christoph Graupner's nineteen cantatas written specifically for Good Friday continues! This third concert, out of six planned, will feature four cantatas by this master of the Baroque era, recognized by his peers as a composer of the first rank.

A regular visitor to the Salle Bourgie, the brilliant pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin returns with a programme that is both poetic and virtuoso, including, among other things, the four scherzos by Chopin, one of his favourite composers.

Adolfo Gutiérrez Arenas and Gilles Vonsattel, two musicians pursuing brilliant careers as soloists and chamber musicians, propose a dialogue between the cello and the piano with works inspired by national sentiment.

After his memorable debut in 2023, the great violist Antoine Tamestit returns to Les Violons du Roy for a new encounter that promises to be just as exhilarating and moving with, among other things, a transcription for string orchestra of  Shostakovich's 15th quartet .

A work in eight movements, Street Beat Suite by the Trio Lorraine Desmarais transports the listener into a unique universe evoking landscapes, but also tributes to jazz greats with whom she has already played. An explosion of styles that ranges from swing to free jazz, via funk, hip-hop, Afro-Cuban music and romantic ballads.

The prestigious British ensemble Stile Antico is marking the 500th anniversary of the birth of Palestrina. A central figure of Renaissance polyphony, his art is closely associated with the splendours of the papacy and the churches of Rome.

How about a movie night with the Trio? From film scores that have enchanted generations of moviegoers to musical works immortalized in cinema, the lineup for this concert is promising. The cult scores of legendary films (The Godfather, Cinema Paradiso, All the Mornings of the World, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Mission) will make music lovers experience intense emotions. Thus recalling the leading role played by great music on the silver screen.

The Van Kuijk Quartet and Parker Ramsay invite us to taste the airy sounds of the harp combined with the intimate color of the string quartet. A flight through some great classics of the repertoire punctuated by exciting discoveries.

Alongside the symphony, the string quartet and the keyboard sonata, the trio for  violin, cello and keyboard remains one of the major genres of classicism. Derived not  so much from the baroque trio sonata, but rather from the "harpsichord pieces that  can be played with the accompaniment of a violin and a viola da gamba" in  which the French masters gave pride of place to the keyboard, the classical trio  will gradually establish the perfect balance between the three partners, each  deploying material corresponding to his own technique, but in total  complicity.

Clarinetist Gabriel Paquin-Buki looks back at the evolution of the perception of folk music in the light of the great composers. Long neglected by classical music, folk music regained some of its nobility in the middle of the 19th century , notably thanks to Liszt, Brahms, then Bartók and Kodály.

The folklore of Eastern countries has greatly influenced classical musicians. Its roots in the Austro-Hungarian Empire prompted composers such as Liszt and Brahms to borrow certain elements from it. The Oktopus ensemble offers us a new reading of the classical repertoire,  " Hungarian style " .

The Swan Song brings together the last 14 lieder written by Schubert before his death at the age of 31. Benjamin Appl and Eric Lu, two renowned performers who were destined for Schubert's art, join forces in this emotionally rich program.
