A sparkling programme filled with timeless American classics, from the captivating sounds of Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man to John Williams’ Olympic Fanfare and Theme. Originally composed for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984, our performance will celebrate its 40th anniversary and coincide with the Games in Paris this year. Plus Gershwin’s jazz-inspired Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris, as well as music from the much-loved musical West Side Story.

Piano prodigy Eric Lu, recent winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition, gives us Schumann’s intensely creative Piano Concerto in A minor. A new work by Canadian composer Zosha Di Castri, that examines the repetitive nature of our world, and asks questions about what we could — or should — change. Perhaps you’ll find the answers as Beethoven takes us on a contemplative journey to the Viennese countryside with his “Pastoral” Symphony.

Winner of the 2018 Leeds competition and recipient of the 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Eric Lu is becoming a major force in the piano world. After his Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut last October, Chicago Classical Review said he “played with a maturity beyond his 24 years,” and WTTW Chicago praised his “remarkable fluidity and [] touch that was at once crystal clear and sublimely expressive. Lu’s playing was absolutely stunning and brought fresh life to a familiar work.” Lu has a special affinity for Schubert, saying, “It is difficult to describe how meaningful his music is to me. He was the ultimate artist, in the purest sense of the word. Late in his life, with death staring him down and all his hopes and dreams dashed … he continued to churn out one masterpiece after another. I have come to the conclusion that he is the composer who moves me most intensely.” Lu will play Schubert’s first piano sonata, which remained unfinished and shows influences of Mozart and Beethoven. Mozart reserved use of the minor key for his most dramatic outpourings Out of over 600 works, only 30 were in the minor key. These included the A minor piano sonata, written around the time of his mother’s illness and death. In a letter to his father, he wrote, “I have indeed suffered and wept enough – but what did it avail?” Mozart’s despair can be heard in this beautifully dark piece. Chopin’s third and final piano sonata overflows with melodic inventiveness and is one of his most difficult works, both technically and musically. BSO Assistant Conductor Earl Lee, making his full-program Symphony Hall debut, is joined by acclaimed young Chinese American pianist Eric Lu for Wolfgang Mozart’s passionate, stormy D minor piano concerto. The title of South Korean-born composer Unsuk Chin’s brief, exciting concert opener translates as "suddenly, with power." Composed during one of his periods of chronic depression, Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony is nevertheless wonderfully affirmative and optimistic in character.

Praised by the New York Classical Review as a musician of “exceptional musical sensitivity,” the young American pianist Eric Lu is rapidly building a reputation as a promising artist with a distinctive musical voice, known for uncanny elegance, delicacy, and restraint at the keyboard.  A recipient of this year’s prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, Lu first came to attention at age 17 as a winner at the 2015 Chopin International Competition in Warsaw. Three years later, he scored another triumph, capturing First Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition, the first American to receive that award since Murray Perahia.   Lu makes his Cal Performances debut with a spellbinding program of Schubert and Schumann.

The first American to win the prestigious Leeds Competition in 46 years, Eric Lu is a pianist to watch. His rendering of Mozart’s stormy D-minor concerto will balance the high spirits of Mendelssohn’s symphony inspired by the Italian countryside, led by former Dudamel Fellow Ruth Reinhardt, who has been praised for her “incandescent talent, strong musical ideas, and originality.” (The Seattle Times)

A young master with a poet’s sensibility, American pianist Eric Lu makes audiences lean in to appreciate the full magnitude of his artistry. Lu is known for patience, restraint, and a refined, delicate touch at the keyboard, and returns after his rapturously received Cal Performances debut during the 2021–22 season. His recital is centered on works by Chopin, a composer with whom he has been closely associated since he won the Chopin International Competition in Warsaw at age 17. “[Lu’s] emotional depth and dynamic range are particularly striking, bringing light and shade to everything he touches” (International Piano).
