Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra

Ann Arbor, MI, United States

The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (A2SO) is a cornerstone of the cultural community in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Founded in 1928 by a group of five musicians from a local Methodist Church, the A2SO has evolved from a small community ensemble into the largest arts employer in Washtenaw County. Over its more than 90-year history, the orchestra has been dedicated to enriching the region's culture and fostering an appreciation for orchestral music. The A2SO's mission is to enrich the cultural life of the region and to foster a growing appreciation for orchestral music and regional musicians through imaginative programming and community involvement. The organization is committed to inspiring and educating a diverse audience, with a vision to nurture the love of music in community members of all ages through excellent performances of orchestral music. The orchestra's artistic policy is to provide the best possible musical performances to the community with a high degree of artistic excellence. This includes a focus on both core repertoire and new works, as well as a commitment to growing its audience and engagement with both adult and youth communities. Throughout its history, the A2SO has been led by a series of distinguished music directors, including Carl St.Clair, Sam Wong, Arie Lipsky, and, most recently, Earl Lee. The orchestra has grown significantly since its inception, becoming a fully professional orchestra in 1986 and now boasting a roster of talented musicians and a dedicated Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers. The A2SO's performance history is rich and varied, including collaborations with other local arts organizations such as the Ann Arbor Pioneer High School A Cappella Choir. The orchestra has also been involved in educational initiatives, such as participating in Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program, and has received accolades for its service, including the Distinguished Service Award from Rotary of Ann Arbor.
