Alabama Shakes

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF) was founded in 1972 in a high school auditorium in Anniston. By 1977, it was designated as the State Theatre of Alabama, and in 1985, it moved to a 21.5 million performing arts complex in Montgomery. ASF is recognized as a leader in the performing arts across the state, region, and nation. It enriches the cultural identity of the South by producing a diverse array of performances, including Shakespearean classics, contemporary plays, musicals, and theatre for young audiences. ASF is committed to community engagement through transformative theatrical performances and educational programs, reaching more than one million students annually. The organization emphasizes artistic excellence, accessibility, and inclusivity, and is dedicated to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of its operations. ASF's SchoolFest program offers high-quality theatrical experiences to nearly 35,000 students each year. As a storytelling institution, ASF is also committed to anti-racism, ensuring its practices and policies foster a welcoming and equitable environment for all.
