Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No.1 was performed so often on the same instrument that the keys started to move by themselves, as if played by a dedicated, though invisible, pianist. Holy water wasn’t enough to deter the ghostly musician, so the instrument was packed up and sent to the landfill (ghost included). Isata Kanneh-Mason performs this concerto with LMP, but reduces the chances of witchcraft by playing on a modern piano.

Haydn’s Nelson Mass was composed in 1798 against a backdrop of fear as Napoleon’s army fought its way to Austria. Haydn didn’t know it, but while he was writing this choral masterpiece (originally called Missa in Angustiis or ‘Mass for Troubled Times’), the British Royal Navy under Admiral Horatio Nelson was delivering a stunning victory over the French forces at the Battle of the Nile. News of the victory supposedly reached Haydn on the day of the work’s premiere, and so began its association with the naval hero, cemented when Nelson visited the Esterhazy court and met Haydn in 1800.

In medieval times, Croydon was famous for its funfair. People would come from far and wide to browse the stalls and enjoy the entertainment, and the area came to be known as the Fair Field. When Fairfield Halls opened on this site in 1962, this formalised its centuries-old status as the entertainment centre of south London. In 1988, LMP became the Resident Orchestra at Fairfield Halls and Croydon. Our arrival built on the area’s strong tradition of classical music, found also in the form of composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor who lived here over a hundred years ago.

Green Room is a brand new concert festival launching 1-3 September, taking world-class artists, usually found on the big stage, into intimate and beautiful performance spaces.

Mozart wrote this concerto at the end of 1785, when he was still the pianist darling of Vienna. In these years, he was composing concertos to perform at subscription concerts, which for the spendthrift Mozart provided a necessary source of income.

The year is 1962. NASA is trying to shoot a man to the moon and for Ivan Ivanovich, the Russian Cosmonaut, the Space Race is on. But rather than heading up and out, Ivan is journeying in the opposite direction to centre of the Earth in his atomic-bomb fuelled vessel, Little Orpheus. Join Ivan on his journey as he traverses prehistoric lands, dives into undersea kingdoms and dodges the occasional tyrannosaurus rex.

You might think you know what happens at a coronation. A huge procession goes to Westminster Abbey, where the monarch puts on sacred robes, gets anointed with oil and (crucially) gets crowned. But we at LMP are casting our eyes (and ears) back to coronations of the past, where things didn’t always go so smoothly. Take, for example, the coronation of William I, where actual rioting broke out on the streets outside but the King remained inside, resolute on being crowned. Or the coronation of Queen Victoria, where the bishop stuck the ring on the wrong finger, the holy altar was covered in sandwiches and an elderly lord rolled down the stairs. His name was – if you can believe it – Lord Rolle.

In this concert, BBC Radio Presenter and Associate Artist of the Royal Albert Hall, Anna Lapwood, turns pipe dreams into reality by, quite literally, taking us inside the pipes with her camera, revealing the hidden side of the instrument we never get to see. Performing on Fairfield Halls’ organ for its grand re-opening, Anna plays Saint-Saëns’ colossal Symphony No.3, nicknamed the ‘organ symphony for its fiery showcase of the organ as it depicts the end of the world.

Sometimes the symbolism is clear, like in Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending; it beautifully depicts a soaring bird, brought to life by the solo violin. Joanna Marsh’s In Winter’s House draws from a fairy-tale like setting of light and dark text. Other pieces leave their narratives open to interpretation, like Coleridge-Taylor’s Four Noveletten (translated as ‘short stories’) which lets listeners’ imaginations run wild.

From the Scottish Isles in Macmillan’s punchy Saxophone Concerto to the pastoral English countryside of Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves, the programme showcases the rich variety of folk-influenced classical music. As well as spanning the globe, tonight’s music also traverses time, transporting you from Dowland’s olde lute-inspired Flow My Tears to the contemporary pizzicato in Jessie Montgomery’s Strum.
