The Forum Auditorium

A rhapsody on Gypsy tunes, an American masterwork played by an American soloist, and Beethoven at his sunniest. Rising star William Hagen brings Samuel Barber’s violin concerto, on a program with Zoltán Kodály’s whirling Dances of Galánta and Beethoven’s beloved bucolic romp, his Pastoral symphony.

Singer and pianist Paul Loren returns in a program of swinging hits made famous by Frank Sinatra: Come Fly With Me, Ain’t That A Kick In The Head, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, My Way, The Best Is Yet to Come, New York, New York, Summer Wind.  Gregory Woodbridge conducts.

Join us for a program of four journeys spanning one hundred years. We voyage to the sea and back in Benjamin Britten’s stunning interludes from his opera Peter Grimes, we encounter the afterlife as envisioned by Richard Strauss, we hope not to turn to stone with Stacy Garrop’s arresting Becoming Medusa, and we will be captivated by Igor Stravinsky’s depiction of love, struggle, and, ultimately, joy.

We open our 96th season of concerts at the Forum with Rossini’s exuberant overture to La Gazza Ladra, (The Thieving Magpie). Renowned pianist Jeffrey Biegel plays James Stephenson’s piano concerto, a technical and expressive tour-de-force written for Biegel, himself. Hector Berlioz’s mind-bending orchestral epic, Symphonie fantastique completes the program.

The percussionists of the HSO take center stage in a spectacular new work for four players and numerous instruments (including wine glasses!). The program opens with Mozart’s delightful Haffner symphony and concludes with the great Louise Farrenc’s third symphony, a Romantic jewel from 1847.

The Golden Age of the Silver Screen

Anny Clyne wrote Masquerade for the London Proms, which she describes as “…a place where people from all walks of life mingle to enjoy a wide array of music…”.  To widen our array of concert offerings, we bring Kurt Weill’s rarely heard second symphony, composed just before his escape to France during the second world war.  It is a must-hear mix of neo classical irony and modernism.  Sergei Rachmaninoff’s third symphony, which the composer called ‘one of my best pieces’, is a masterclass in melody.

Masquerade

Composed in 1873-74 in memory of Alessandro Manzoni, an Italian poet and novelist much admired by the composer, the Verdi Messa da Requiem is a work of sublime melodies and dramatic contrasts, all in service to the powerful emotions engendered by the timeless text.  The large-scale Requiem transcends both the opera house and the house of worship to create one of concert music’s greatest experiences.  Othalie Graham leads an all-star cast.

Called ‘the new voice of the American Rock ‘n’ Roll songbook’ by Billboard Magazine, Michael Cavanaugh was the original star of “Movin’ Out”, Twyla Tharp’s Tony-Award winning Broadway show based on the songs of Billy Joel.

Perhaps the most recognizable piano concerto in the repertoire, Tchaikovsky’s first will come to life in the able hands of the brilliant young pianist, Joyce Yang.  Jean Sibelius’ haunting tone poem about a mythical swan and Bartók’s thrilling Concerto for Orchestra spotlight the virtuoso players of our Harrisburg Symphony.
