The DSSO is thrilled to feature internationally acclaimed pianist Jeffrey Biegel, who will breathe life into Gershwin's masterpiece. The concert will also premiere Peter Boyer's "Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue," a vibrant new work that pays tribute to Gershwin's legacy. Additionally, the program includes Antonin Dvorak's "American Suite" and Samuel Barber's "Symphony No.1," showcasing the rich tapestry of American music.

This landmark event, titled "Rhapsody in Blue at 100," is set to take place on Saturday, July 27, 2024, starting at 8:00 pm. Under the baton of esteemed conductor Carl St.Clair and featuring the virtuosic Jeffrey Biegel on piano, the evening promises an unforgettable journey through Gershwin's masterpiece that seamlessly blends classical music with the vibrant rhythms of American jazz.

The program for the evening extends beyond "Rhapsody in Blue" to include Leonard Bernstein's electrifying "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story" and the California premiere of Peter Boyer's "Rhapsody in Red, White, & Blue." Following an intermission, the audience will be treated to Gershwin's "An American in Paris," further celebrating the composer's genius in capturing the spirit of his time.

This special concert not only commemorates the 100th anniversary of "Rhapsody in Blue" but also showcases the Pacific Symphony's dedication to presenting works that resonate with both classical aficionados and newcomers alike. George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” is celebrating its centennial. The 1924 musical composition by the iconic George Gershwin is one of his most recognizable creations in American music history. To celebrate the centennial, pianist Jeffrey Biegel created the Rhapsody National Initiative and, Peter Boyer composed a new work for piano and orchestra inspired by the iconic masterpiece. The new work is titled by Mr. Biegel for Mr. Boyer to compose: “Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue.” To showcase this new work, Biegel envisioned the initiative, where the new work is performed in every state over three years. It is a three-year project for 50 states to have their performances of the new work symbolizing the American flag, while celebrating our diversity and unity through music.

A three-part celebration starting with the music that defined the Roaring Twenties.  First, listen to music of the era in the concert hall, such as George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris.Then, foxtrot on the Plaza to the JT & Friends band, and finally, enjoy the landmark 1927 silent film It starring Clara Bow, accompanied on the organ by Dennis James.

Experience the majestic "Pines of Rome" with the Pacific Symphony, under the baton of Maestro Carl St.Clair, featuring pianist Jeffrey Biegel. This enchanting series of concerts will take place from Thursday, February 6, through Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Each evening promises an unforgettable journey starting at 8:00 pm, with a special preview talk by KUSC's midday host Alan Chapman at 7:00 pm.

The program opens with Bernstein's electrifying "Slava!", followed by the world premiere of Adolphus Hailstork's Piano Concerto, showcasing the virtuosic talents of Jeffrey Biegel. The evening continues with another world premiere by Pacific Symphony’s Composer-in-Residence, Viet Cuong, before culminating in Respighi's awe-inspiring "Pines of Rome", a musical depiction of the Eternal City's grandeur, complete with the sounds of an actual Italian nightingale.

We all share a love for our homeland, and in this final event of our season, we celebrate some of the voices which combine to make Juneau our home. From iconic American music by Aaron Copland, to the Alaska premiere of Peter Boyer's Rhapsody in Red, White, and Blue with internationally renowned pianist Jeffrey Biegel, to original works from Juneau singer-songwriter Annie Bartholomew, we'll be celebrating what it means to be an Alaskan and an American. A special performance of music from Four Moons by Louis Ballard, widely regarded to be the father of Native American composition, marking the first time the JUneau Symphony has performed music by an Indigenous composer.
