The MSO season finale begins with one of the great American symphonies, Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2. This program ends in a celebration of the tenure of Violin Fellow, Jihye Choi in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s lyrical and passionate Violin Concerto.

Explore sounds inspired by Spain with the MSO! Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont tells the tragic and heroic story of a nobleman who, as a martyr, inspired a national uprising that contributed to Dutch independence. Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral showpiece Capriccio Espagnol features virtuosic displays of Spanish flare, and Mexican composer Arturo Marquez presents a fiery conclusion with his Danzon No. 2! This will also be the first concerto performance for our new Cello Fellow, Jiaoyang Xu.

From the popular music of our favorite holiday films to traditional holiday carols and Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, this will be the performance to ring in the Holiday Season!

Join the MSO on a journey showcasing local talent. We begin with composer Shaka Marko’s Beethoven in Kenya, a piece which intersperses thematic material from Beethoven with the dance rhythms of Marko’s native Nairobi. Baritone Tyrone Hayes sings Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer, a setting of the composer’s own poetry describing a youthful experience with nature and love. The evening concludes with a performance of Brahms’s radiant Second Symphony.

The MSO continues a multi-season celebration of American music, opening with the youthful exuberance of Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide and Jessie Montgomery’s meditative and unifying Hymn for Everyone. Internationally renowned pianist Jeffrey Biegel joins us for the Alabama premier of Peter Boyer’s Rhapsody in Red, White, and Blue and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

MSO Violin Fellow Jiyhe Choi returns as soloist in Prokofiev’s energetic, somber, and warm Violin Concerto No. 2. Prokofiev’s moody concerto and the melancholy of Sibelius’ Valse Triste are juxtaposed by the vivid impressions of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, especially in the majestic finale “The great gate of Kiev.”

Classical Concert 2

Renowned pianist, and MSO favorite, Adonis Gonzales returns as soloist in Rachmaninov’s highly virtuosic, lush, and bittersweet Piano Concerto No. 3. Another legendary pianist-composer, Franz Liszt explores the quintessential themes of romanticism in the symphonic poem, Les Preludes. This program opens with Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout premiered in 2020 as a tribute to the heroic efforts of health care works during the Covid-19 pandemic.
