The Sitkovetsky Trio is a well-established and exceptional piano trio, having previously received the BBC Music Magazine’s Chamber Music Award. This  concert starts with a fresh interpretation of works from Max Bruch’s ‘Eight Pieces’, (originally written for piano, viola and clarinet), that allows each of the trio’s soloist talents to shine through in turn. The concert’s a rare opportunity to hear music by French composer Cècile Chaminade. In 1913, she was awarded the Légion d’Honneur, a first for a female composer. Her Piano Trio No. 2 in A min is a work filled with gorgeous and lyrical melodies, as is the concert’s finale work, Brahms’ Piano Trio No. 2 in C Major.

Beethoven could be passionate through his music, and the Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano and Orchestra is one such breathtaking moment. The outer movements speak of the exuberance of music and the second movement is a song of longing for an unattainable beloved. The youthful Sitkovetsky Trio obliges us with a jaunty rondo movement that brings the proceedings to a joyful ending.

We start our concert with a new work by the phenomenal young composer Julia Adolphe who wrote the piece for us in memory of her father. This emotional and life-affirming trio was premiered by us at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center earlier this year, and we can‘t wait to introduce it to the Menlo Audience. The Sitkovetsky Trio kicks off our celebration of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 150th birthday with his Trio élégiaque, composed when he was only 18 years old as an homage to his elder friend and mentor Tchaikovsky.  In addition to Ravel’s technically challenging trio and Mendelssohn’s richly harmonic trio No. 2, Sitkovetsky will premiere a new work by L.A. based composer Julia Adolphe whose music is described as “alive with invention.” This concert is part of our intimate, on-stage seating chamber series designed to place you in the very heart of the performance.
