A Far Cry beckons you on a sonic journey to Stonehenge. The early light of the emerging dawn pulses and shimmers on granite, awakening the bucolic English countryside. This concert is crafted to evoke and transport you to the enigmatic, pre-historic monument by way of musical selections which draw inspiration from the rising sunlight, the sculptures of Isamu Noguchi, and nature itself.

Rob Kapilow, with the assistance of Boston's self-conducted chamber orchestra A Far Cry, explores Tchaikovsky's sweeping Serenade for Strings in the context of Tchaikovsky's life and career. He unpacks and illustrates some of Tchaikovsky's compositional choices and provides illuminating biographical and historical context about the composer, and how he negotiated the various political and artistic movements of his time.

If you’ve heard Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings, you know it’s full of gorgeous moments and sweeping feeling, but have you ever wondered what, specifically, makes it great and keeps avid listeners coming back again and again?

What Makes it Great? with Rob Kapilow, featuring A Far Cry

Three new works inspired by poet T.S. Eliot’s lyrical meditations on time and humanity’s relationship to it are presented alongside four movements from Beethoven’s exquisite and profound string quartets (the very same which were said to have inspired Eliot to write his Four Quartets). Through the Art of the Piano Foundation, acclaimed pianist Awadagin Pratt commissioned seven composers—including Montgomery, Singleton, and Prestini—to create works for piano and string orchestra or piano, string orchestra and vocal ensemble, based on Eliot's Four Quartets. Pratt, A Far Cry, and Roomful of Teeth recorded these works and released Stillpoint, from New Amsterdam Records.

Three witches, three muses, three little pigs: The “rule of 3” suggests that humans find groupings of three more satisfying and meaningful than other number combinations. A Far Cry puts that theory to the test with a program of string trios. This sensuous assortment of 20th and 21st century works highlights the intimate and intensely collaborative nature of the genre.

The beloved Boston-based ensemble returns to Rockport with a dynamic program that includes Golijov, Dvorák and a new commission for Juantio Becenti.

Originally commissioned as a ballet for Martha Graham, the suite has become auditory shorthand for a kind of populist Americana, but Kapilow finds elements of the piece that keep avid listeners coming back as he illustrates Copland’s specific choices that surprise, subvert audience expectations, and set the work apart.
