In an enlightening program featured in Carnegie Hall’s Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice festival, the ensemble explores Berg’s dramatic Lyric Suite, a string quartet that achieved immediate and lasting popularity—long before the discovery of its hidden origins and evidence of the illicit affair baked right into its score.

Ensemble Connect explores the past, present, and future of classical music with a spirit of adventure and endless possibility. Among other to-be-announced selections, this program includes Schubert’s lively “Trout” quintet, a piece that showcases the young composer’s melodic gifts and highlights the singularly beautiful possibilities unlocked by its unusual instrumentation.

Called “the new face of classical music for New York” by The New York Times, Ensemble Connect invites audiences into a boundless world of classical music that spans continents and centuries. In this season’s first performance, Ensemble Connect fellows perform Bartók’s Contrasts, a virtuosic piece commissioned by Benny Goodman and violinist Joseph Szigeti. They also perform the New York premiere of a Carnegie Hall–commissioned work by inti figgis-vizueta, a rising composer with a “fertile imagination for instrumental combinations and advanced playing techniques” (New York Classical Review), for whom “there continues to be nothing but promise” (The New York Times).

The talented musicians performing in Ensemble Connect form “one of the strongest ensembles in the city” (New York Classical Review). Over the course of this two-year fellowship program, extraordinary young professionals perform a series of concerts that smartly bridges the history and future of classical music, from timeless Baroque music to new works. This program includes a Philadelphia premiere by Michi Wiancko, commissioned by Carnegie Hall; brilliant quintets by Mozart and R. Schumann; and Dark Wood by Pulitzer Prize winner Jennifer Higdon—a title that refers to the bassoon, used virtuosically throughout the piece.
