She is only in her 30s and lives life in the city. Sweet boyfriend, lovely apartment, newborn baby. It all works. But it is turned upside down when her boyfriend tells her that he has got a job as a teacher at a high school in Velling! A small spot on the west coast of Jutland, where the grass stands horizontally in the wind, and where sentences are few and short. How is she supposed to function in that society, with her great love of words? Because what do people from West Jutland actually think about in the pauses between their sentences? And how does she avoid filling the silence with gibberish?

Hannibal orders nothing but hanging. His days drag on boringly while his grandmother knits chickens, and his parents endlessly tell how healthy boys made time pass in the old days. But Hannibal doesn't think it's as much fun as when his father was a boy, so he just hangs on. A strange and captivating Christmas adventure begins when sisters Maja and Babette must set off to find help for their mother in labor. The snow begins to fall, and the children lose their bearings and get lost in the darkness. They suddenly find themselves in a strange universe, where both magic and challenges unfold. The town's new and inexperienced district bailiff, who is also the priest's future son-in-law, is forced to solve the case. But as the investigation begins and the events unfold, skeletons come out of the closet, and a grim story of old grudges, spurned love and frayed morals sees the light of day.

Here they hear on the radio about a murder committed nearby, and when they are visited by a skiing police commissioner, it is clear that the murderer is most likely among them. When another murder takes place, the tension rises and fear sets in. For who is the murderer? Everyone is under suspicion - and everyone is potentially the next victim!
