Central Oregon Symphony is a prominent community-based orchestra that has become an integral part of the local fine arts scene in Central Oregon. Founded in 1967, the symphony originated as an extension of the Central Oregon Community College Fine Arts Department. Over the years, it has experienced significant growth and celebrated its 50th season in the 2016-2017 year. === History === The orchestra was established with humble beginnings and has since evolved into a major cultural entity within the region. The organization is passionate about preserving classical music traditions and actively supports various music education programs for individuals of all ages. === Leadership === Under the leadership of Music Director Michael Gesme, a Professor of Music at Central Oregon Community College, the symphony has flourished. Gesme's role includes conducting the Central Oregon Symphony and the Cascade Winds Symphonic Band, as well as teaching music theory, ear training, music history, and conducting. His extensive experience and dedication to music education have been instrumental in guiding the symphony to new heights. === Musicians === The Central Oregon Symphony boasts a diverse group of musicians who come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have trained at prestigious music schools such as the Eastman School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and Cleveland Institute of Music, while others have developed their skills through local music programs and regional universities. This mix of experiences and shared passion for performing arts contributes to the symphony's strong and cohesive ensemble. === Governance === The symphony is overseen by an Executive Board, including President Amy Mitchell, Secretary Elouise Mattox, and Treasurer Mac Farnsworth, as well as other board members who contribute to the organization's direction and success. The day-to-day operations are managed by staff members such as Executive Director Tanya Elia, who joined in 2018 with extensive experience in the nonprofit sector, Education and Outreach Coordinator Ryan Zwahlen, and Logistics Assistant Rosemary Miller. === Community Engagement === The Central Oregon Symphony is deeply involved in community and education outreach, offering various programs and initiatives to engage with the local population and foster a love for music.
