With more than 3,000 poems, the German-Jewish poet bears witness to how deeply life and literary expression can merge. Rose Ausländer (1901–1988) grows up in the quadrilingual Bukovina, lives in New York, becomes an American citizen, returns to Galicia, is arrested by the Soviet secret police, is later confined by the Nazis in a ghetto, survives the Shoah, and travels again to New York, Vienna and Düsseldorf. Her poetry processes the experiences of exile and of the Shoah. For Rose Ausländer, writing is the way to her identity.

The Ideal Household Toolkit

The radical political transformation from totalitarianism to democracy is reflected in literature and culture in many forms. At the same time, works from exile surface, as do works written decades earlier but blocked by censorship. Contemporary texts appear alongside them. Belatedly, intellectual currents of the 1970s and 1980s, such as postmodernism, are only now being received; they inspire the literary scene and establish new forms, for example in the work of Jáchym Topol, Radka Denemarková, Jaroslav Rudiš or Katerina Tucková.
