**About the Collaborators:**

- **Jupiter String Quartet:**  
  Since becoming artists-in-residence at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2012, the Jupiter String Quartet has delighted Krannert Center audiences with their innovative and varied musical collaborations.

- **Robin Wall Kimmerer:**  
  A mother, scientist, and decorated professor, Kimmerer is an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and the author of award-winning books such as "Braiding Sweetgrass" and "Gathering Moss." She is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of environmental biology and the founder/director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment.

- **Su Lian Tan:**  
  A dedicated flutist, composer, and teacher, Tan is a professor of music at Middlebury College. Her music, inspired by her Malaysian Chinese heritage, has been performed by renowned groups such as the Grammy-winning Takács String Quartet and the Vermont Symphony. She has received numerous accolades and awards from prestigious organizations.

Music at Kohl Mansion’s international chamber music season continues on Sunday, November 19 with the Kohl Mansion debut of the nationally acclaimed Jupiter String Quartet. For their auspicious engagement, the ensemble will present Upheaval, a thoughtful program of music reflective of great social political upheaval from the past to the present.

The first half of this globally inspired program, “Folk Encounters,” pairs Su Lian Tan’s evocation of traditional South Asian puppet theatre with Wynton Marsalis’ exploration of the complicated American Creole experience through the lens of a New Orleans ball. The program finishes with folk-inspired chamber music by Dvořák. Dvořák’s exuberant Viola Quintet reflects the composer’s delight in finding kinship between the folk music of America and his beloved homeland of Czechoslovakia.

Music can provide a profound lifeline for those struggling through times of unrest. The composers in this program grapple with the realities of a world full of upheaval and uncertainty, attempting to provide a path to greater understanding. The Irish-English composer Elizabeth Maconchy was an avowed socialist who supported the Republican forces fighting off Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War. Her hauntingly beautiful third quartet emerged out of the shadows of 1930s Europe. Carlos Simon’s heartbreaking Elegy memorializes the Black American victims of police violence, while Nathan Shields' new quartet, Medusa, composed for the Jupiter Quartet for Shields’ Guggenheim Fellowship, uses the paintings of Caravaggio as an inspiration for exploring the effects of various types of political and social violence. Beethoven’s epic eighth quartet is one of the many works he wrote during a time of immense political turmoil.

The New York Times hails the Jupiter String Quartet as “an ensemble of eloquent intensity that has matured into one of the mainstays of the American chamber-music scene. The quartet has performed across the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Americas in some of the world’s finest halls, including New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In 2012, the Jupiter Quartet members were appointed as artists-in-residence and faculty at the University of Illinois, where they continue to perform regularly, maintain private studios, and direct the chamber music program.

The Jupiter String Quartet (“technical finesse and rare expressive maturity,” New Yorker) joins the exuberant East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO) for a wide-ranging program that includes Schubert’s great “Death and the Maiden” Quartet, arranged for string orchestra, and Jessie Montgomery’s take on the national anthem, Banner. “Everything the group touched felt balanced and bright...And the orchestra, as always, played luminously.” (N Y Times)

The Jupiter String Quartet, described as “an ensemble of eloquent intensity” by The New Yorker, performs on tour with East Coast Chamber Orchestra (ECCO). Featuring members of some of the world's finest orchestras, chamber groups, as well as young soloists, ECCO strives for vitality and musical integrity. This historically rich concert program features Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in D Minor, D. 810 (“Death and the Maiden”), arranged for string orchestra by Gustav Mahler; Adolphus Hailstork’s Sonata da Chiesa from 1992, an instrumental counterpart to a traditional choral Mass; and Jessie Montgomery’s Banner from 2014, which, as Montgomery explains, draws on world anthems and patriotic songs to answer the question, “What does an anthem for the 21st century sound like in today’s multicultural environment?”

Now in its 20th year, the Jupiter String Quartet derived its name from the most prominent planet in the sky. The astrological symbol for Jupiter resembles the number four. The musicians place a strong emphasis on developing relationships with future classical music audiences through educational performances within schools and other community centers. They believe that, because of the intensity of its interplay and communication, chamber music is one of the most effective ways of spreading an enthusiasm for “classical” music to new audiences.

The quartet has performed across the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Americas in some of the world’s finest halls, including New York City’s Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center, London’s Wigmore Hall, Boston’s Jordan Hall, Mexico City's Palacio de Bellas Artes, Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center and Library of Congress, Austria’s Esterhazy Palace, and Seoul’s Sejong Chamber Hall.
