Join us for an enchanting evening with the Monterey Symphony during the "Current Season - SANTA LUCIA" concerts, taking place on March 16, 2024, at 7:30 PM and March 17, 2024, at 3:00 PM. These performances will be held at the prestigious Sunset Center, located at San Carlos Ave & 9th Ave, Carmel. 

This season, we are thrilled to feature the talented pianist Soyeon Kate Lee, who will grace us with her presence for the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20. Unfortunately, due to illness, our originally scheduled soloist Orli Shaham will not be able to perform. We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming her back in the future. In addition to the change in soloist, the program will also see a change in repertoire; the West Coast Premiere of "Light Forming" will be replaced with Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll," a decision made with respect to the piece's specific composition for Shaham.

The concert will illuminate the theme of chiaroscuro—light and shadow—through a carefully curated selection of works. The program includes Mozart's Overture to Don Giovanni, Wagner's Siegfried Idyll, George Walker's Lyric for Strings, and culminates with Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, featuring Soyeon Kate Lee. This selection promises to take the audience on a journey through the contrasts of light and darkness, hope and despair, beautifully encapsulated through music.

Soyeon Kate Lee, acclaimed for her "huge, richly varied sound, a lively imagination and a firm sense of style" (The New York Times), brings her exceptional talent to the Monterey Symphony. Her performances have captivated audiences worldwide, making her appearance a highlight of the season.

The Jupiter String Quartet is a particularly intimate group, consisting of violinists Nelson Lee and Meg Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel (Meg’s older sister), and cellist Daniel McDonough (Meg’s husband, Liz’s brother-in-law). Now enjoying their 20th year together, this tight-knit ensemble is firmly established as an important voice in the world of chamber music.

The Daedalus Quartet has established itself as a leader among the new generation of string ensembles. Since winning the top prize in the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2001, the Daedalus Quartet has impressed critics and listeners alike with the security, technical finish, interpretive unity, and sheer gusto of its performances.


The Daedalus Quartet has won plaudits for its adventurous exploration of contemporary music, most notably the compositions of Elliott Carter, George Perle, György Kurtág, and György Ligeti. Among the works the ensemble has premiered are Huck Hodge's The Topography of Desire, commissioned by the Fromm Foundation; David Horne’s Flight from the Labyrinth, commissioned for the Quartet by the Caramoor Festival; Lawrence Dillon’s String Quartet No. 4, commissioned by the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts; and Fred Lerdahl’s Third String Quartet, commissioned by Chamber Music America, as well as Lerdahl's Chaconne, commissioned by New Music USA.  

       

To date, the Quartet has forged associations with some of America’s leading classical music and educational institutions: Carnegie Hall, through its European Concert Hall Organization (ECHO) Rising Stars program; and Lincoln Center, which appointed the Daedalus Quartet as the Chamber Music Society Two (now the Bowers Program) quartet for 2005-07. The Daedalus Quartet has served as Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Pennsylvania since 2006. In 2007, the Quartet was awarded Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award. The Quartet won Chamber Music America’s Guarneri String Quartet Award, which funded a three-year residency in Suffolk County, Long Island from 2007-2010.

October concerts - Season 33

Music@Menlo is delighted to present A Spanish Journey on April 8 and 9, curated by violinist Kristin Lee. The two-day residency centers around gems of Spanish classical music, including de Sarasate’s fiery Carmen Fantasy, and rarely-heard piano trios. The first event (April 8) is an immersive exploration of Spanish music and dance, with demonstrations from a colorful combination of violin, piano, voice, and classical guitar. The second evening (April 9) is a concert performance of the vibrant works discussed, with a rich program of 19th- and 20th-century music.

Traditional Spanish music is well known for its vibrant and unique sound, but is less frequently heard in the classical realm. Originally inspired by Greek Orthodox music in the sixth century, classical Spanish music evolved to reach huge popularity by the late nineteenth century. Celebrated composers including Pablo de Sarasate and Enrique Granados honored the typical harmonies and rhythmic integrity of traditional Spanish music, incorporating them into their compositions. This “Behind the Music” session offers an opportunity to take a closer look into the history of Spanish folk music, and how it has impacted the writing of revered Spanish composers. We’ll take a deep dive into exactly why Spanish music is so vibrant and easily identifiable, and we will also explore the types of folk dances that are so essential to the rhythms of Spanish music.
