Webern’s Langsamer Satz offers lush, expressive lines from the Austrian composer, known for his atonal works but here showcasing his lyrical side. The program concludes with Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 9 in E-flat Major, a poignant, emotionally charged work that deepens the string quartet form with the composer’s signature depth and complexity.

Like Mozart, Maurice Ravel excelled in every genre he touched, and his single string quartet is considered among the greatest composed. And when speaking of favorite quartets, no one would leave out the famous Adagio from Samuel Barber’s 1936 quartet, performed in this program by rising stars of the classical scene, the Viano String Quartet. Charles Martin Loeffler’s recently-discovered octet also provides a unique, American reflection on Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro, also featuring the harp.

Poignant string quartet miniatures, the last in the genre by both Haydn and Mendelssohn, set the stage for one of Schubert’s Winterreise. Finished during the composer’s final year, the song cycle follows a wanderer who, in the great Romantic tradition, searches in vain for the unattainable. As he trudges through snow and ice, his sanity leaves him as he talks to crows, trees, and finally, a barefoot hurdy-gurdy player, whom he asks to accompany his songs. Indeed, in the end, the wanderer appears to be Schubert himself.

Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik returns to CMS after an absence of 28 seasons, in the company of recent works paying tribute to this famous piece. Mozart’s skill in serenade composing is revealed in his Serenata notturna, preceded by another masterpiece less frequently performed on major concert stages: Pachelbel’s ingenious Canon, together with its sparkling Gigue. Boccherini provides acrobatics for guitar and strings, and Aaron Jay Kernis ends the program with his own unashamedly crowd-pleasing guitar quintet.
