The New Orleans Opera Association (NOOA), established over 80 years ago, has entered its 80th season as of July 1, 2022. NOOA stands as a cultural pillar in the New Orleans arts community, dedicated to producing operas of the highest artistic caliber. Its mission is to enrich the lives of all people by not only presenting professional opera performances but also by offering educational opportunities that embrace both traditional and innovative methods. The organization's vision is centered on connecting people with the transformative joy of opera. NOOA believes that opera is an art form that belongs to everyone, and it strives to make opera accessible and enjoyable for a diverse audience. NOOA is governed by a Board of Directors, with Mr. Dwayne Littauer serving as the President, Ms. Sonya Moore as Vice President, Mrs. Pauline Hardin as Secretary, Mr. Emmet Geary, Jr. as Treasurer, and Mr. James C. Gulotta, Jr. as the Immediate Past President. The association also boasts a dedicated staff and a range of volunteers who contribute to its success. One of the notable facilities under NOOA is The H. Lloyd Hawkins Scenic Studio, which is renowned as one of the foremost rental studios for opera scenery and properties in the United States. The studio maintains an inventory of 20 opera productions, catering to both large and small venues, thus supporting opera productions across the country. NOOA also supports emerging talent through initiatives like The Donald W. Wood, Sr. Vocal Competition and Advancement Grant. Established in 2015, this competition serves as an entry point for local high school students into the professional world of singing. Many past participants have gone on to achieve regional, national, and international recognition as young artist professionals. The New Orleans Opera Association continues to make significant contributions to the cultural landscape of New Orleans through its commitment to excellence in opera production and its dedication to community engagement and education. With a history deeply rooted in the city's rich cultural tradition, NOOA remains a beacon for opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike, fostering a love for this timeless art form.
