Opera Festival of Chicago

Chicago, IL, United States

The Opera Festival of Chicago is a prestigious cultural institution that aims to bring world-class productions of Italian opera to the city of Chicago, particularly focusing on masterpieces that are infrequently performed in the United States. The festival was founded with a mission to cultivate a deep appreciation for Italian opera among Chicago audiences, to make these culturally significant works accessible to a broad demographic, and to provide an enriching and inspiring environment for both artists and audiences. With a vision to fill a perceived gap in the city's operatic offerings, the Opera Festival of Chicago seeks to celebrate Italy's rich operatic traditions and emulate the ambiance and artistry found at renowned Italian festivals such as those in Spoleto, Pesaro, Verona, and the Festival Puccini. The festival's goal is to establish itself as the premier destination in America for high-caliber Italian opera performances. The founding members of the Opera Festival of Chicago are pillars in the operatic community, bringing a wealth of experience and passion to the festival. Emanuele Andrizzi serves as the Music Director, bringing his expertise to guide the musical direction of the festival. Franco Pomponi, the Festival President, provides leadership and vision for the organization's future. Ella Marchment, the Artistic Director, is responsible for the overall creative direction, ensuring the artistic quality of the productions. Tim Corpus, the Marketing & Operations Director, oversees the festival's marketing strategies and operational logistics. The festival is also committed to nurturing the next generation of operatic talent through opportunities for young artists. It provides a critical platform for emerging performers to work alongside established professionals, thereby upholding the high standards and demands of Italian opera. Each season, the Opera Festival of Chicago presents a carefully curated selection of operas and events. The 2023 season includes productions such as "Murder in the Cathedral," "An Italian Soirée," "Ferruccio Furlanetto in Concert," and Verdi's "Attila." In addition to performances, the festival offers a range of involvement opportunities, including auditions and apprenticeships, fostering community engagement and participation. The festival's commitment to safety and the well-being of its patrons is evident in its COVID-19 response, ensuring that audiences can enjoy the performances with peace of mind. The Opera Festival of Chicago operates with the support of its community, relying on donations and volunteer involvement to continue its mission of bringing exceptional Italian opera to the heart of Chicago.
