Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya is an award-winning artist who is known throughout the world as the unrivalled master of Hindustani slide guitar. A product of the demanding tradition of the ancient guru-student training system, he has received numerous international awards and accolades, including two Grammy nominations, Billboard Top 10, and the BBC Planet Award. Rounding out the Ensemble are Debashish’s daughter Anandi, a gifted vocalist and a rising star in her own right, and Debashish’s younger brother Subhasis, who is recognized as one of the greatest percussionists of his generation.

Nashville-based Sunny War has crafted an eclectic set of songs that draw on a range of ideas and styles: ecstatic gospel, dusty country blues, thoughtful folk, rip-roaring rock and roll, even avant-garde studio experiments. She melds them together into a powerful statement of survival, revealing a probing songwriter who indulges no comforting platitudes. “I feel like there are two sides of me,” says the singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso. “One of them is very self-destructive, and the other is trying to work with that other half to keep things balanced.” That’s the central conflict on her upcoming album, Anarchist Gospel, which documents a time when it looked like the self-destructive side might win out. Sunny says, “Everybody is a beast just trying their hardest to be good. That’s what it is to be human. You’re not really good or bad. You’re just trying to stay in the middle of those two things all the time, and you’re probably doing a shitty job of it. That’s ok, because we’re all just monsters.”

Jacob Jolliff is one of the world’s premier contemporary mandolinists. He attended Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship and In 2012, he won the USA’s National Mandolin Championship. A fixture of the bluegrass community, he has collaborated and shared the stage with Béla Fleck, Tony Trischka and Michael Daves, to name a few. He also toured as a member of the groups Joy Kills Sorrow and Yonder Mountain String Band. His own ensemble, The Jacob Jolliff Band, is one of the most cutting-edge progressive bluegrass groups on the scene today. They’ve released two album, with a third on the way in May 2024. They play a combination of complex original instrumental music and trad tunes. Improvisation is at the forefront.

The Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation, informed by the familiar sounds of the Virginia mountains where the band was formed, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. In 2005, Jay Lapp (vocals, guitars, mandolin) and Eric Brubaker (vocals, fiddle) joined lead singer Trent Wagler (guitar, banjo) in forming the band as a vehicle for Wagler’s songwriting. They released several albums under Wagler’s moniker, before officially adopting the The Steel Wheels name with the 2010 release of Red Wing. Quickly staking their claim as independent upstarts in the burgeoning Americana scene, The Steel Wheels followed up this release with three more self-produced albums in the next five years, before joining forces with producer Sam Kassirer for Wild As We Came Here (2017) and Over The Trees (2019). Kevin Garcia (drums, percussion, keys) joined in 2017, bringing a new level of sonic depth and polish to the outfit. Newest member Jeremy Darrow rounds out the rhythm section and grounds the band as they continue to explore deeply rooted yet fresh folk rock sounds.  Having gained the experience of thousands of shows, festivals and many miles on the road, the stubbornly independent band has formed deep bonds with each other and the audience that sustains them.

New York City singer and songwriter Jim Andralis’ songs shine a light into the heart’s darker crevices and discover the beauty there, or at least make whatever’s living there feel less lonely. In addition, he notably works as a trauma-focused psychotherapist in private practice, performs regularly with husband/hunk Larry Krone and co-hosted country music variety show Grand Ole Pubry at Joe’s Pub. Jim Andralis & the Syntonics opened for Bikini Kill at Irving Plaza in NYC and closed Joe’s Pub 2023 Gala by performing a song he wrote for their friend, Joe’s Pub Vanguard Residency honoree Barbara Maier Gustern. His fifth LP, Ghosts, contains eleven songs about grief, exploring whatever connections may or may not exist between the living and those who have passed. “Something in me cannot fathom that people can be here one second and gone the next. I hate it. It happens all the time and it always levels me. And music somehow is the answer. When I sing, I feel connected to all of them, all of me and anyone listening who’s willing to go there with me.”

Liza and Willie met in music class at Newtown High School, Queens, New York. They became very good friends and wrote songs together. Willie created a bachata group called Juventud where he was the lead guitarist and Liza was the lead singer. After "Juventud" broke up, Liza and Willie became musicians for bachata artist Andy Andy. Shortly after, another bachata group was created and named MW (Many Ways) with Liza, Willie and friend Melvin. MW was signed to RFG Records and distributed by J&N Records. MW’s Changing the World album was released in the year 2005. The group then disbanded.

Kiki Valera is one of Cuba's foremost cuatro-guitar virtuosos and a fourth-generation member of La Familia Valera Miranda, the pioneers renowned for more than a century as creators of Eastern Cuba's Son tradition. Over the last century, this style of traditional Cuban music has contributed to many other musical genres, including jazz, cha-cha-cha, mambo and salsa. Cuban Son is the music that made the Buena Vista Social Club worldwide stars in the late 1990s, but Kiki Valera comes from a family of musicians whose involvement with Son pre-dates the BVSC by decades. Now based in the United States, Valera's dynamic ensemble features many of Latin America's most outstanding musicians including lead vocalists Carlos Cascante (Spanish Harlem Orchestra) and Victor Castillo (Giraldo Piloto y Klimax) and extraordinary trumpeters Alexis Baró (Cubanismo, Omara Portuondo) and Pete Nater (Salsa Legends and Masters Academy).

Joey Arias: Metal Love II

Brazilian music-inspired NYC group As For the Future makes their Joe’s Pub debut to celebrate the release of their first album on June 14, 2024. Drawing on a variety of styles – bossa nova, samba, MPB (Música popular brasileira) – and combining them with rock, jazz, folk, and soul influences, the group mates their distinctive sound with vibrant, original lyrics. Along with vocalists David Nagler and Alexia Bomtempo – who met on a Joe’s Pub Artist Zoom! – the band features Mauro Refosco (David Byrne's American Utopia, Red Hot Chili Peppers), David Lizmi (Elysian Fields), Ray Rizzo (Josh Ritter), and more. The group took shape during the summer of 2020, when over 15 different musicians contributed remotely to the recording of new material. These sessions resulted in a self-titled album comprised of 10 songs that are wry (“Koan for the Music Business”), political (“The Mob”), comprehensive (“Encyclopedia of Songs”), and evocative (“Childlike”). The album will be available at the show on vinyl and deluxe edition CD.
