The Public Theater, founded over 60 years ago by visionary Joe Papp, stands as a pioneering nonprofit theater in the United States, dedicated to ensuring that art and culture are accessible to all. Located at its landmark home in Astor Place, with additional performances at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park, The Public has been at the forefront of engaging with vital social issues and ideas through its diverse programming. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, it offers an annual season of new works, the celebrated Free Shakespeare in the Park, the Mobile Unit that tours New York City's five boroughs, Public Works, the Public Shakespeare Initiative, and performances at Joe’s Pub. Known for premiering the groundbreaking musical "HAIR" in 1967 and for its role in producing the Tony Award-winning musical "Hamilton" by Lin-Manuel Miranda, The Public Theater continues to shape the canon of American Theater. It has been honored with numerous awards, including 60 Tony Awards, 190 Obie Awards, and 6 Pulitzer Prizes, reflecting its significant impact on both the national and international stage.
