Broward Center for the Performing Arts

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is a premier venue for a wide array of performances and cultural events located in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Since its opening on February 26, 1991, with a memorable performance of "The Phantom of the Opera," the Broward Center has established itself as a cornerstone of the South Florida arts scene. It ranks among the top ten most-visited theaters in the world, drawing more than 700,000 patrons annually through its doors to enjoy over 700 performances each year. The Broward Center's inception was the result of a collective dream shared by the Fort Lauderdale and Broward County communities. In the early 1980s, local government, business, and private sector leaders recognized the need for a modern performing arts complex to serve as a catalyst for growth and to meet the demands of the burgeoning cultural community in South Florida. The existing venues, including Fort Lauderdale’s War Memorial Auditorium and The Parker, were no longer sufficient to accommodate the region's cultural needs. Through a unique public/private partnership, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts was conceived and became the anchor for a new cultural district in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The venue was designed with state-of-the-art production facilities, increased seating capacity, spacious backstage areas, and versatile event spaces. In 2009, the Broward Center embarked on the ENCORE, Building Community through the Arts initiative, a plan to reimagine and revitalize the Center for future generations. This led to a significant expansion project that began in 2012 and was completed by 2014. The project included updates to the theaters, the addition of new dining spaces, and the refurbishment of public areas. The expansion also introduced two new buildings: the Huizenga Pavilion and the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center, both of which enhance the Broward Center experience. The Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center, which opened in the fall of 2014, is a testament to the Broward Center's commitment to education. It features classrooms, a coaching studio, and integrated technologies for distance learning, as well as the JM Family Studio for teaching, rehearsals, recitals, and intimate performances. The Broward Center's educational programs are designed to foster artistic expression and appreciation for the performing arts among children, teens, and adults. These programs include classes, workshops, master classes, performances, and lectures, made possible through a longstanding partnership with the Broward County Public Schools and the support of the community. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts continues to be a beacon for arts education and performance, enriching the lives of residents and visitors in South Florida.
