Three outstanding works weave three compelling stories. Witness the world premiere of a work written for the KSO by legendary musician Branford Marsalis, a glowing example of today’s voices breathing new life into orchestral music! Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand gave new hope to a pianist wounded in World War I, embracing human resilience and triumph. Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, written as an act of defiance, is filled with bold brass and roaring percussion.

The Symphony is joined by the mighty Western Michigan University Grand Chorus for a powerful performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s haunting Requiem. Thea Musgrave’s The Seasons takes us on a musical voyage through the seasons of our lives.

The Harry PotterTM film series is one of those once-in-a-lifetime cultural phenomena that continues to delight millions of fans around the world. This concert will feature a live symphony orchestra performing every note from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's StoneTM.  Audiences will be able to relive the magic of the film in high-definition on a 40-foot screen while hearing the orchestra perform John Williams' unforgettable score.

“With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation to a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.” So said Dr. King in a speech given in 1963 in Kalamazoo’s Miller Auditorium. The arts community joins together to honor his life and legacy. Featuring a side-by-side performance with the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra, this concert embodies music as a unifying force in our community.

Craft Music: Folk Songs

Kick off your holiday season with visions of sugar plum fairies and nutcracker princes! Together with the Ballet Arts Ensemble, the Symphony reimagines this magical Kalamazoo tradition.

This magical production is performed by a full orchestra in Miller Auditorium. With such a large ensemble, the orchestra will use the pit extension, bringing the audience and ensemble together for a Nutcracker unlike any other! Extravagant costumes and larger-than-life sets add to the magic of the stunning choreography performed by the Ballet Arts Ensemble and guest dancers.

With just four thunderous notes, Ludwig van Beethoven has moved audiences to the edge of their seats for centuries, ready to embark on a journey through his fateful Fifth Symphony. Jonathan Bailey Holland’s lively The Party Starter is the perfect concert kickoff, followed by a striking performance by the 2023 Stulberg International String Competition Gold Medalist.

Just in time for Halloween, Manuel de Falla's El amor brujo tells a tale of ghosts, enchantments, and cursed love.

From Johann Sebastian Bach’s boundless musical imagination came six brilliant masterpieces: the Brandenburg Concertos. Full of unbridled virtuosity and spirit, KSO musicians take center stage for this Bachtoberfest celebration. Béla Bartók brings to life four eccentric musical characters in one of his most popular works, Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. Sami Seif’s Glory to the Voice rounds out the concert with a fresh take on a traditional hymn.
