Hagen’s The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci gives voice to the mind of a thinker whose ideas still shape our world, with the MSU Choir weaving his words into something almost otherworldly. Then, we set our sights on the stars with Holst’s The Planets, a piece that captures the energy, mystery, and wonder of the universe—from the commanding presence of Mars to the dreamlike drift of Neptune. Two journeys—one through history, one through the cosmos—both reminding us of the limitless nature of human imagination.

The season finale opens with a piece by LSO Composer-In-Residence and a Piano Concerto featuring Gilmore Young Artist, Harmony Zhu. We close our 94th season with the sonorous and romantic Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor. For those who know the Second Symphony, this symphony delivers that and more in a slightly more compact package featuring only three movements, a format Rachmaninoff adopted from his successful Piano Concerti.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s influence was far-reaching and ushered in a movement of music that was picked up and further developed by composers like Wagner and Strauss. Beethoven’s one and only Violin Concerto has become an audience and performer favorite, filled with delicate melodies and stunning poignance. This concert opens with a premiere by Los Angeles-based composer Sarah Gibson, which the League of American Orchestras commissioned with the generous support of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.

Chamber 04: Piano Quartet

The concert opens with W.A. Mozart’s spirited and buoyant Symphony No. 35 “Haffner.” Then hear Lansing Symphony’s Principal Trumpet, Neil Mueller, perform the world premiere of David Biedenbender’s new Trumpet Concerto. The concert closes with a piece by French composer Georges Bizet that was not discovered and performed until nearly eighty years after it was written. Bizet’s Symphony No. 1 in C major is his only symphony and showcases his lyrical and expressive qualities while maintaining a Mozartian lightheartedness and levity.

Carmina Burana is one of the most iconic pieces of classical music borrowed extensively by Hollywood and Madison Avenue because of its power, effectiveness, and evocative qualities. This thrilling concert opens with the joyous and uplifting Umoja Anthem of Unity, a new work by living composer Valerie Coleman.

Jon Nakamatsu performs Rachmaninoff’s Variations on a Theme by Paganini, a piece that blends brilliance with a touch of mischief. We then premiere a brand-new work by LSO Composer-in-Residence Jared Miller—because the best way to honor the past is to embrace the future. And finally, Respighi’s Pines of Rome, a symphonic poem that rises, swells, and shines—just like the city it was inspired by. A fitting way to mark the end of an era and the beginning of whatever comes next.
