Crystal Theatre

Crystal Falls, MI, United States

The Crystal Theatre is a historic performing arts venue located in Michigan, known for its exceptional acoustics and rich history. Originally built as a vaudeville and movie theatre in 1927, it was first named the EJAY after its founder, E.J. Bregger, who was a local arts enthusiast. With an original seating capacity of 820, the theatre provided a space for residents to enjoy vaudeville acts and silent films, accompanied by live music from a theatre organ. ===History=== In the late 1940s, the EJAY was sold to the Delft movie chain and subsequently came under the ownership of Aldo Zaupa, leading to its rebranding as the Aldo Theatre. It continued to operate as a movie theatre until the early 1980s when it closed its doors. However, in 1989, a dedicated group of volunteers, recognizing the theatre's historical and cultural significance, undertook the task of restoring the Crystal Theatre to its former glory. Their efforts culminated in the installation of a vintage Möller pipe organ, which replaced the original one that had been sold. The theatre reopened in the spring of 1991 with a production of "Our Town" by the Forest Park drama department. Today, the Crystal Theatre stands as a testament to the community's commitment to the arts, hosting a diverse range of entertainment events. It is particularly noted for its pure acoustics, which are often praised by artists and are considered superior to many modern venues. The theatre operates with the support of a nine-member board of directors, whose vision is to foster engagement with the performing arts within the extended community, establishing the Crystal Theatre as the premier venue in the area. ===Board and Staff=== The Crystal Theatre is overseen by a board of directors, including President Wilma Kallies, Vice President Chuck Blum, Secretary Ruth Warmanen, and Treasurer Heidi Curtis, among others. The board also has volunteer coordinators and ex-officio members who contribute to the theatre's operations. The staff is led by Managing Director Kristin Underhill and includes a stage manager, Jim Visintainer. ===Community Involvement=== The Crystal Theatre thrives on community support, offering opportunities for donations and volunteer involvement. It is a cultural hub that not only provides entertainment but also encourages local participation in the performing arts. The theatre's commitment to the community is reflected in its regular events and the board's dedication to making it a first-choice venue for artists and audiences alike.
