Ponselle, in particular, is a figure of great significance in Maryland's operatic history. Discovered by Caruso, she made her debut in 1918 at the Metropolitan Opera House and later served as the Baltimore Civic Opera Company’s first artistic director, significantly contributing to the region's operatic excellence. However, the Baltimore Opera Company disbanded in 2009 due to financial challenges and economic conditions. Its successor, Lyric Opera Baltimore, struggled to maintain opera performances until the end of 2017. In a move to ensure the sustainability of opera in the region, Maryland Opera, Inc. was established after the Modell-Lyric ceased producing opera performances.
